This was a nice experiment. I was out of canvas, and found some pastel paper that said on the label for oils, too. Wallis is the brand, and the paper is supposedly archival. The sanded surface was lovely to paint on, it grabbed the paint so nicely, that I may do more with this. I would think for framing you (or your framer) would have to mount the paper onto a backing before framing.

In Sketchbook Skool this week, we are enjoying inspiration and demos from Liz Steel. She does a lot of teacups and architecture. So our homework has to do with those two things. This is my entry into the teacup gallery. There is a bit of gold gouache along the edges of the cup and it's saucer.

The Crepe Myrtle are gorgeous and in full bloom in our neck of the woods. I love the back side of the leaves. And the colors are so lovely.

There was mixed reaction to the "Rough and Tumble Sunflowers" from the other day, so I decided that maybe I'm not quite ready for that style. You've got to be able to pull it off. I put this one back up on the easel, and made the leaves and background more polished looking. Better? I also have reduced the price. We'll see.

One of my earliest collectors, who has become a friend, is an antiques dealer, and once in awhile runs across art supplies at estate sales and various treasure hunting venues. She calls them art goodies, (thanks, KM!) and when she comes down to the DC area to visit her son, brings me treasures. This canvas panel is one of those. It's a vintage...um...antique...um, okay, really old canvas panel from "Duro," which has been in business since 1938. The canvas looks to be maybe from the 40's? Photo below. I love old things. I gessoed the canvas front and back, and it painted up beautifully. See some detail shots below.

A little bit more of a formal approach today, with blending and a slower style. I like it too.
I think the vase (which was a thrift shop find) turned out nicely. As I was painting I was thinking of how when you try to take a photo of a bunch of kids, they are all looking everywhere but at the photographer. "Look here, guys! Face front!"

This is a bit of an experiment. I normally smooth and blend pretty much the entire painting, but today I just left things "brushy" to see how it would work. What do you think? You can see all the brush scrubbing throughout. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it's different, anyway.

Using the same sunflowers in the same thrift shop vase as yesterday, I simply turned the paper around, and had a much better time. In Sketchbook Skool this week, we are working with continuous line drawing (where you don't lift the pen off the page, but backtrack and cross over if you need to), and watercolor, and this was my homework submission.

Our new assignment in Sketchbook Skool was to do a continuous line drawing in ink, and then to use watercolor over top. I loved my still life set up, but the first two attempts were sad at best. This is my third try, still not great, but for now, it'll have to do. The lawn needs mowing.

If I cover up the left eye, this does look something like me (minus the double chins and wattles.) Actually, if I cover either eye. Which tells me that the eyes are off. But a likeness is really tough. This is part of this weeks' assignment in Sketchbook Skool, where it's "selfie" week. I am very much enjoying the skool.

There is a lovely creek that runs along The Devil's Backbone, a natural rock formation just outside of Marlinton, WV. The creek is variously called Beech Creek or Knapp's Creek. Maybe it's like some streets and changes its name as it meanders. Below are a couple of photos of the Devil's Backbone, truly impressive in person. It also has an interesting history.

We are back in Sketchbook Skool, second session, and the Theme this six weeks is "Seeing." Our first assignments involved deep-looking, trying to really "see" the details in a piece of toast, and then doing a Fast and Slow sketch, doing a gesture drawing in paint or wash, then going over it in ink to find as many details as we could. My entry for the Fast Slow is below, but I enjoyed the technique so much that I wanted to do something a bit more serious for DPW. These are onions from church this past Sunday (someone has a food ministry, collects leftovers from some of the organic stores in the area, brings them in for the church folks.)
