Hydrangeas, Gouache - SOLD

Hydrangeas, Gouache

SOLD.

I was thinking about a different paper surface, and when I unearthed my pad of Bristol, I found an old watercolor that I had apparently played with, and forgotten. (Bristol is actually meant for dry media.) So I used gouache over it, just to see how the paper worked, and to see what would happen with gouache in a looser treatment. Looks like I need to go over the black areas again, bit other than that, I'll let you guys be the judges.

This one could be square, but I've allowed a little extra breathing room at the right.
Just because, which if you like that look, would make is more like 13" x 14".
This one took all day, just so many little pieces.

With Gouache, does the paper make a difference?
Yes, gouache acts differently on different paper, just as watercolor does. I like the smooth way gouache goes on this toned cotton paper, but it does take more to cover an area. The blending is easier as well. I'll have to try other papers, see what happens.

I'm finding out with gouache that you need to get your brights and lights down first. Otherwise it'll take too many coats to bring something up to a bright light. Here I went very gingerly with the light yellows, and later decided that it had gotten too chalky, so added more bright at the end. (Chalky is one of the dangers, I am finding, with gouache.) In some places I treated the paint like watercolor.

Daffodil in Gouache - SOLD

Daffodil
Gouache on Paper, 9" x 7"
SOLD at $5 plus $10 shipping.

OK, it's heavy handed. Attempting a delicate daffodil with gouache, not altogether successful, I will admit. Still trying to get used to this medium, which always dries darker than what it looks ike wet.

Crabapple Blossoms - SOLD

Crabapple Blossoms
Gouache on Watercolor Paper, 11" x 15"

Below is a possible crop. You can cut this one anyway you like.

Another gouache of blossoms, but this time I let some of the watercolor properties of the gouache play out.
And I let go a little bit of my need to "blend" everything. Less frustrating.

Another gouache piece, this time on white paper. Still not getting easy, a tricky medium.
