I'm finding out with gouache that you need to get your brights and lights down first. Otherwise it'll take too many coats to bring something up to a bright light. Here I went very gingerly with the light yellows, and later decided that it had gotten too chalky, so added more bright at the end. (Chalky is one of the dangers, I am finding, with gouache.) In some places I treated the paint like watercolor.

This is another one on the Sanded Wallis Paper, archival to 500 years. I do like working on this surface, but noticed today that it does seriously wear down my brushes. I painted my favorite brush to almost a nubbin.

My friend brought me a couple of canvases (thanks, KM!), so I used one today, thinking about all the lovely fall colors coming up. Not that I'm anxious for fall, I could happily take three Julys before I got tired of it. If I got to choose, I'd also happily take three Octobers!

I've been doing some complex paintings lately, not so much in the results, as in the execution. Today I was able to ship out a bunch of paintings, and then there was some "running around", and I wanted something simple and small. This was just the ticket.
