This one went through some changes, as I started it with the light on the right, and then we lost power in the DC area, due to a very heavy snow that knocked trees and power lines down all over. I had to change the light to whatever natural light was coming in my sliding glass door/window from the left. So everthing shifted and became less dramatic. I painted it with about five layers on as the apartment got colder. BUT I painted! Hence, the Snowstorm Apples. (The photo shows a very washed out left side, taken with natural light. The painting isn't that washed out.)

If you've got it in your head be loose, it's tricky out of the gate to remind yourself to draw carefully beforehand. This one should have been lower in the format.

I've been in a little slump lately, with paintings that I'm really happy about few and far between. I'm content with most, but not really pleased. The longer I paint, the more growth I want, the harder it is to get there. Now just every once in awhile, I get something I like. This is one of them.

I still want to figure out a more "massy" way to do these guys, but for now, same style.

I did this little demo, since we were talking about doing water, and how the brush stroke direction can help you get the illusion of water. You know when they start to complain about you to visitors ("Yeah, she's really mean. She picks on us all the time.") you've got a lovely rapport. ("Yeah, I make 'em work really hard! They can't get away with anything in here.")

Another one of my treasure finds from Tuesday Morning, the little shiny red pitcher (maybe an unmatched creamer?) I had it side lit, then tried top lighting, and liked it much better. It showed off the shine in the little pitcher, and made the mango more dramatic.

He doesn't exactly convey the delight I felt when I spotted him in the Tuesday Morning. There were 2 of them, one standing, terra cotta statues, but since they were each $15.00, I couldn't bring them both home. I thought I would justify my little splurge by painting him, but oh, well...they can't all be successful. I really didn't catch the red, did I? Anyway, I'm enjoying this happy little studio mascot.
