These lemons did not want to stand in a straight line, so it's apt for a "Jansen", since we don't stand in straight lines either. But we do like making the best of what life serves up.

The Cut Through - NA

The Cut Through Oil on Stretched Canvas, 16" x 16" Not Available. I actually got outside yesterday afternoon to do a plein air painting. Granted, it was the back patio, with quick access to bathroom and coffee, but plein air nonetheless. Behind my son's apartment on the first floor in this complex, there is a stretch of woods separating this property from a large church/school complex. People cut through to get to the road and bus system, and have created a nice little path just there. The light is wonderful to watch as it changes throughout the day. I've been meaning to paint it, and I think there will be a couple more, different times of the day, different light.

I didn't realize until I was half way through with this one, that I was using only blues, reds and grey mauvey mixes. It became a two color study, more or less, and I think it has a sort of "classic" feel to it. Very still, very quiet.

The trick with white is always what other colors to use to make enough contrast for the white to "read" as white. Contrast works, but you don't want too much. Here I tried to use a soft greyish green, some very light lavender, and touches of pink to make the shapes of the blooms. I used a palette knife for the leaves, a nice little change for me.
