I liked the bones of this one, and since it's grey and overcast today, I am more settled to be indoors working. So I took some time to finesse this little guy. I went at it with a palette knife. MUCH better!

So instead of a "real" painting, you get a quick sketch today. (So I can go play!) The reference photo is lovely, and deserves a more attention, so I should probably do this one justice sometime.

The magnolias here in Chestertown are mostly old, majestic and large. They have been spectacular this Spring, they must like cooler Spring weather (since it has been so far.) They are all but done now, the hefty looking petals all over the ground. I really have enjoyed them.

This one was just delicious to paint, all these wonderful greens. Like Spring, where it's so lovely to watch everything greening up, and the sweet new bright greens you see at this time of year. I'm sure you'll see this one again, it was just plain fun to paint.

One inch cradle to the wall.

This one was just a BEAR to paint. Sadly, I realized about half way thru that I should have reserved this Cradle Board for a landscape, since earlier I had coated it with orange tinted gesso and it was still really smooth. Like painting on glass, with the added problem of the orange underneath. Yikes! My paint kept slipping and sliding around, so I had to go fairly thick, which is not how I like to do still life. Oh, well, it's done now. Painted all around the edges, so no frame is needed.

I've got to do at least one blooming tree portrait for Spring.  
This one looks a little more lavender than the painting actually is. I mean, it is pink/magenta, but not this purple. There may be more, they really are fun to paint.

Every once in awhile, it's fun to take an old painting, and give it a second look. See what is disconcerting about it maybe, or what could be improved. In this case, the painting felt closed in somehow, so I tried "opening" it up, and adding more space. The path also stopped fairly abruptly, with little visual explanation. Below is how it looked before:

So a little experiment: I put yesterday's painting away, and didn't refer to it at all, while working on a second painting from the same reference. Interesting the differences.

I'm not sure if these are actually cherry blossoms, but I'm guessing that's familiar. They might be apricot or pear too, something like that. But painted loose and impressionistic.

This one is large, and has some presence. It took me three days to paint. I kept getting lost in the photo reference, what goes where? I simplified things considerably, and I'm happy with the results. The idea is that you are standing right in front of (or inside) a blooming magnolia.

This one was originally well received, but I had it priced high, and I always thought that the lighting was a little confusing. Where was the sun, anyway? See below, this is how it looked before.




So I changed the direction of the light, and adjusted some of the foliage to make it clear. Did I make it better? I think so, but I'm not sure.
