Washday - SOLD

Washday Oil on Canvas mounted on board 6" x 12", Sold at $25.00 plus shipping. Using up the limited palette colors and some scraps of Home Depot masonite, I did this one quick this morning. Yes, there really are folks who still hang out their wash. I took a photo of the neighbor's wash from down the street, and wondered how many of us remember doing this? Thanks for looking.

Back in March, I did a sky puddle painting, and wanted to do another in summer foliage and colors. I like the way everything looks wet in this one. It was nice today to work on something comfortable, ie. Landscape. Using the limited red-green palette again here, no yellow or blues. Thanks for looking.

The revised version is shown at the top. I think it looks a bit more realistic, since the puddles feel more natural.

August Profusion - SOLD

At the Farmer's Market yesterday on the town green, our booth-neighbors (organic farmers) had these gorgeous bouquets of August flowers. We bartered: they got a painting and I got flowers and bunches of veggies and fruit. I think this one has a flavor of all that color and shape, some of the individual flowers are better painted than others, but by and large, I'm happy with it. Thanks for looking.

However, I still am struggling mightily with how to paint flowers with petals. I want to paint like Carol Marine, who does exquisite work (http://carolmarine.blogspot.com/) with all her flowers and still lives, but I'm simply not there yet. I'll just keep working at it. Brownie Lake - SOLD

A nice lady enjoying the lake with her dog told me that its name is Brownie Lake, and I hope I've spelled it right. A wonderful day for painting outside, just hot enough, nice breeze. I really liked the color of all the "stuff" floating on the water, and the bright greens of the water plants growing near shore. What a job I have, huh? Thanks for looking.

Shadow Road - SOLD

Shadow Road Oil on Canvas board, 16" x 20" Sold at $100.00 plus shipping. I decided to work with a limited palette today, no yellows, no blues. It's a palette from a book on oils, which gives three limited palettes: blue-yellow, purple-orange, and this one in red-greens. You get a turquoise and a citron, and then several reds and greens, black and white. So I spent a lot of time mixing colors today, to get the brighter ones I wanted. (Citron and Scarlet make a nice orange.) I like this one a lot, it has harmony to it. The book: The Yin/Yang of Painting by Hongnian Zhang, a lovely book. Thanks for looking.

It was so beautiful outside today, that I went and sat in the backyard, and painted what my grandson Jimmy calls the "Dragonfly Park" where he was busy catching them, large and small. It's a small plein air piece after all the detail of the sunflowers, painted loose and sketchy. I was tring to capture the sparkle of the morning, with the bright light popping thru the woods in the back, and the light on the wildflowers. Thanks for looking.

Sunflowers One- SOLD

Sunflowers One Oil on Canvas board, 6" x 8" SOLD at $30.00 plus shipping There were sunflowers at the Farmer's Market this morning, so I bought a half dozen and started on a large painting. Realized after swimming with the kids that I wouldn't be able to finish it tonight, so did this smaller one first. Probably good practice for the larger version, which I'll finish tomorrow. I think my tole painting experience gives me problems here, since I find my hand wanting to make a "swish" for the petal, and that just doesn't cut it. I'll work more carefully tomorrow.

Forest Walkway - SOLD

Forest Walkway Oil on Canvas board, 16" x 20" SOLD at $85.00 plus shipping. Yesterday we went blueberry picking, and this was the scene as we were leaving. The farm is tucked away at the end of a dirt road, and this is so typical of the landscapes here in this part of New England. Lots of dappled woodland. I did take some shots of the kids picking, but I haven't decided yet what to do with them. This one is a little different for me, since I used some new greens, rather than my usual warm yellow-greens. There are more of the grey-greens here, and cool blue greens. Thanks for looking.

Isn't it interesting how two paintings done the same size, from the same photo can turn out quite differently. Slightly different composition, slightly different sky, slightly different color choices. Alex was sitting on the front porch yesterday morning with her cereal, and it was a painting wanting to happen, so I asked her to stay put and grabbed my camera. This is the result. I loved the backlighting on the bowl and her hair and face, and the beaustiful line of the arm and neck. I took a few shots of the painting in progress, and will put those on my sketch blog. I'll sell this one to the highest bidder, and am hoping for a two-days worth of painting price. (The lines are straight in the painting, where the slats slant here, it's the photo.) I quick grabbed my camera. But since I want to take my time on her, I did this little guy of a South Carolina sunrise, so I could post it and then go on to the "Alex" painting. Hydrangea in Grey - SOLD

I tried to do this one in subtle colors, both light and dark. I'm really loving some of the greys that I'm mixing. The other experiment was in using a soft square brush for the whole painting, and not blending (much). I'm still deciding whether I really like it or not, but I did enjoy doing this one, so direct. Lazy August Field - SOLD

Lazy August Field 16" x 20", Oil on Canvas board Sold at $85.00 plus shipping. The day was gorgoeus today, so after church I packed up and headed out to my favorite field. The haying was done, so I drove right out into the field and enjoyed a couple of hours where it was just me and the monarchs, a gliding hawk overhead, and a distant lawn mower going. What bliss! Such wonderful peace and quiet. The sky was a crazy blue, and I kept checking my mix and adding more blue. (Although this is showing more intense than it is painted.) Thanks for looking.
