This one is to answer the question, "How much do you think you can fit onto a 6" x 6" canvas?"
In other words, how much detail? I know a lot of the artists on DPW do a LOT with such a small space, but I wasn't sure that I could. Maybe, just maybe...

I knew there was a reason I kept a bunch of tubes of Acrylics. You just never know.
I still have to work on subtle colors, since Acrylics tend to be very bright. Tricky ti mix correctly, I think.

Every once in awhile, a palette knife painting is just the slow down I need. I paint these with just the tip of the pointed small knife, a little tap tap stroke. I'm always happy with how much careful blending you can do with such a tool. Of course, the pieces take forever, but it's also a fun way to paint.

I had painted this one last week, and called it "Ablaze at Wildwood." (Scroll down five posts to see.) Since it didn't sell, I decided to play around with it. I added more green, added more sky holes, used a palette knife to make it a bit more complicated and textured, and lowered the ground line. Much better now, I think. More "leafy" looking.

There is a small pond in Amherst that my friend B visits most years in the fall. She has sent me photos.
Spectacular colors reflected in the dark water, so lovely, and I was thinking about Solomon in all his glory, not being arrayed as splendidly as God's fall palette.

Another version of the Burnt Orange trees at Wildwood. This time I tried to resist the urge to go at it with my palette knife, not entirely successful, but for the most part, this is a brush painting. Yum on the colors.

I know, you've seen so many maples from me this fall. I think this may be the last time for using this particular reference, taken in front of my daughter's old house in Barre, Massachusetts. But yes, I wanted one more, just one more. I wasn't quite finished with the lovely maples. My favorite fall trees.

Amazing, no yellows!
I snapped the reference photo for this one on the way home from an unsuccessful plein air outing with a class I was taking at the time. I love the orange reflections in the water. It was probably the best part of the day.
And yes, the painting did go more easily today, back in the saddle.

It's been five days since I painted with oils, having taken a small detour to do a couple of watercolors. Just long enough to forget how to paint, really. I had to struggle with this one, scraping some area off twice to repaint them. I'm pretty happy with it now, but I wonder how that is, that you can forget so quickly, and be awkward with the return.
