Since they are all in relatively accurate sizes compared to each other, (the bumblebee shows large here, but it's the smallest one of the group) I can see them as a grouping, either framed in one frame with separations in the matting, or in three small frames. Aren't they lovely? The dragonfly has a little sparkle in it, I used some watercolor shimmer medium there.

They do have a story behind them. My grandson Jimmy, when he was much younger (we're talking 2008) would collect dead bugs for me to draw, and when he would find them, he would put them on my "sacrificial paper plate," a paper plate dedicated to only dead bugs. Isn't that a fun little detail?

My lovely sunflowers are beginning to fade, they droop a bit more every day. But I wanted to get at least three paintings out of them, so here is the last. The petals are shriveling too much to be "good models."  I may just do some sketching of the droopers, since I like this stage as well.

But for painting, it's on to other subjects now.

I think this one turned out really nicely. I was very free in the painting, since it's done on an old canvas, with nothing to lose. I've also dropped the price a little, since I didn't even sand the canvas down, just left the bumps and textures. Here's the old canvas, just for fun. See if you can spot the parts that I left showing.

These sunflowers come with a bit of a story. I got them yesterday at the Saturday Farmer's Market here in Chestertown, which is wonderful, as are all farmer's markets. They are the huge ones, with stems about an inch thick, and faces that I estimate at 8" across. I broke two glass vases trying to balance the stems in the vases, and in the process, got water all over my kitchen. Finally, I remembered my heavy ceramic pitcher, and used that. It seems to be working.

After looking at this one on my wall for a week or so, I decided that it needed to be more "open." There was too much of a claustrophobic feel to it, with all the dark foliage. So today I took my time, tinkered around with it. Made the pink bush bigger, consolidated the foliage, added more sky, cleared some underbrush so more of the field shows. Overall much better. I've dropped the price, since the sky is lumpy, even though I sanded it where the tree on the right covered the sky area.

Clear Out Sale, New Pricing Structure

Two things to mention today.
One: I had some oral surgery this morning...ouch...so I won't be posting much this week, and what I post will be slloooooowwww, since they gave me some good pain meds, which make me droopy.

Two: I normally listen to videos, sermons, movies, shows...while I paint. And for the past couple of weeks I've been listening to Stefan Baumann. He's a internationally known professional artist, and quite an inspiring teacher. I've been getting a lot out of videos of his classes, where he also interacts with his students, and you get to watch over their shoulders.

So to keep myself going, I'm cleaning out a couple of paintings that haven't sold.

The other result of watching the Stefan Baumann videos, for ME, is a new pricing structure, very easy, very predictable.  He tells his students to simply charge $2 per square inch minimum for every painting that they do. So an 11" x 14" will be 11 x 14 to get the square inches. 154 square inches times 2= 308. So an 11" x 14" would be priced at $308. Here's the video. Very worth watching. (The bit about this price structure starts at 11:25.)

I already know that it's TOO much of a sticker shock for my collectors. So the new structure for me will be $1 per square inch, in this case $154. Maybe next year $2 per square inch. I'll start with the next painting, see where we go with it. Ready?

This one is priced a bit higher than my regular 6" x 6", since it's painted around both sides, top and bottom. There is a hole in the back of the board for hanging, so this one needs no frame or wire. Open the box and hang it up.... well, you have to hammer a nail first.

We had another life drawing session on Tuesday evening, and I had a spot right in front of Omar, so a lot of his poses were facing me and my seat mates on either side. I thought both of these were good enough to post, with a little sticky note loin cloth attachment. He's got really long arms and legs.

Sometimes a painting just sort of "paints itself", which means that it just all goes smoothly and easy, everything falling into place in one try. Well, that didn't happen here. Two days in the works. A whole bunch of mistakes and corrections, a lot of changing my mind, and fumbling along. BUT in the end, I'm quite pleased with this one. Please click on the image to see it larger. There's quite a bit of detail on this larger canvas.
