Same stem of blossom as yesterday's painting, just turned a bit and in a different jar. I really liked it when it was in its sketching and turpentine stage, and I'm thinking of a painting now that is simply a sketch. Maybe tomorrow. Blue Hydrangea - SOLD

It's so muggy out today that I decided not to do any plein air, and clipped a stem of my daughter's gorgoeus hydrangea bush instead. The blues and lavenders in these blossoms are so appealing. I purposely steered my colors towards more grayed tones, and I think the effect is soft and nice. I'm planning to do it again tomorrow, using the brighter colors again to see which one works better. This would look good in a room with blue decor. Thanks for looking.

This one is of Nagler Cross Road in Huntington, and I feel that it turned out quite well. I tried to use a round brush today, since I always reach for the square brushes, and then just use them on the side. Silly, since there are round brushes for those strokes. Yesterday was one of those gorgeous blue sky days, so I parked my easel in front of my daughter's driveway and painted the road (which actually looks more like a pathway here) with a large canvas balanced on my small easel. What really attracted me was the trees against the sky, the contrast against an incredible cobalt sky was startling. Wonderful! Thanks for looking.

Red Barns Barre - SOLD

Red Barns Barre 12" x 16", Oil on Gesso Board Sold at $65.00 plus shipping. I think there's a rule somewhere that says you can't paint in New England without doing barns and farms every so often. This one is just outside Barre town proper, along Route 57. On this painting, I tried to show the haze of the distance, and give the air a bit of a purple glow. I also tried to keep the bright colors I'm used to using a little less intense, grabbing some greys and complementary colors to tone things down. Thanks for looking.

Sweet Gullah Country - SOLD

Sweet Gullah Country 10" x 10". Oil on Canvas Board Sold Back from our three week excursion, having spent time in the Blue Ridge mountains, the Smokies, and finally at the beach in South Carolina, where we heard about the Gullah culture. What a sweet part of the country, with it's marshes and islands, just beautiful. My clever sil made a dish with fresh shrimp called "low country boil" or Frogmore Stew, which has its origins in this area. This little painting is a representation of the views you see when driving around in the "low country". I wish the image were mine, but I must tell you that I copied it from a pastel in a book by Elizabeth Mowry called The Pastelist's Year. I was challenged by one of the subsrcibers to try more palette knife painting, so this is one I worked on last night and this morning. A knife in the hands of a master is an awesome tool, but I don't have the command of it, and find that there are aspects of it I like and some I really don't. You really have to work with it awhile to have control, I think. The water was hard, but I enjoyed "mushing" the trees and slopping the paint around for the shore. The little boats were awkward at best.

This is the last oil painting I'll be posting for awhile, as I am accompanying the family on their vacation to help out with kids. Morning Garden - SOLD

While the watercolor class was working inside at Sarah's home this morning, I went out in her garden, where the Siberian irises were still in bloom. It was a scorcher today, so I didn't last too long, but with the small canvas, I was able to do a corner of her morning color.
