Wanderings

Wanderings
Oil on Canvas Panel, 6' x 6"
Not Available, Revised on 5/5/2017

This one is to answer the question, "How much do you think you can fit onto a 6" x 6" canvas?"
In other words, how much detail? I know a lot of the artists on DPW do a LOT with such a small space, but I wasn't sure that I could. Maybe, just maybe...

I was very excited to find canvas panels in the 12" x 12" size.
Sometimes it pays to go to a different store.

So this is what I got, after some fits and starts.

Around the Bend - SOLD

Around the Bend
Oil on Canvas Panel, 12" x 16"
SOLD

Below is a close up of a little part of the painting, so you can see the palette knife work.
Detail below.

Every once in awhile, a palette knife painting is just the slow down I need. I paint these with just the tip of the pointed small knife, a little tap tap stroke. I'm always happy with how much careful blending you can do with such a tool. Of course, the pieces take forever, but it's also a fun way to paint.

Plein Air Brook - SOLD

Plein Air Brook
Oil on Canvas Panel, 14" x 11"
SOLD at $20 plus $8 shipping.

This one started life as a plein air painting, but after about a half hour, the mosquitoes won and I gave up.
I finished it today by walking and standing to study the scene, then back inside to cool down and paint. It's not exactly what I was seeing, but pretty anyway.

A palette knife painting of a bit of the woods behind our place, all shaded and dappled on this wonderful sunshiny summer's day. A lot of texture in this one.

Woods on Red Ground - SOLD

Woods on Red Ground
Oil over Acrylic on Canvas Panel, 11" x 14"
SOLD at $30 plus $8 shipping.

Here is a close up detail of the palette knife stroke:

This one started out as a lesson in acrylics for my private student, Kelly, yesterday. I wanted to show her how you could use a solid color (red in this case) as an undercoat, and let bits of the color show through.
Today I decided to paint over it with a palette knife, and sometimes that's just right. Using the very tip of a palette knife is almost like drawing with a pencil, there's so much control, and you can get such nice  variations, and color shifts. Isn't this one nice, in site of it being out of season?

Snow Day - SOLD

Snow Day
Oil on Canvas Panel, 12" x 9"
SOLD at $20 plus $8 shipping.

And the snow did come, crippling the entire region into a snow day.
Here's what I saw out my slider today, white above and white below:

It is the male cardinal's job to come and let me know that the bird feeder needs filling, and as soon as the snow stopped, he was chirping from the handle of the lawn mower. (Yes, I filled it.)
Stay warm, everyone, and I hope your power stays on.

Snow Coming - SOLD

Snow Coming
Oil on Canvas Panel, 12" x 9"
SOLD
Since I started with DPW, I have veered every day more towards asking "What do I think might sell?"
I had some good luck with a couple of auctions, and have gotten tensed up, trying for another "winner" Not a good way to paint. A couple of folks sent suggestions, and I appreciate that. I am going to try to:
  • only paint what I want to paint, regardless of whether it might sell
  • not repeat myself unless someone asks
  • slow down (a suggestion from a collector)
  • branch out and experiment (another suggestion)
  • work smaller, and do more watercolors (another suggestion)
Thanks to those of you who sent ideas for me to get re-inspired.
This is a loose and sketchy impression looking out my window, with snow predicted tonight.

Shady Summer Road

Shady Summer Road
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 16"
Available Through DPW, at $50 plus $8 shipping.

My girl friend and I ventured out early this morning, and saw the beginnings of tiny flurries. By the time we got home, there were a few inches, and messy driving. Now, of course, we have a nice pile of snow outside, and low temps are predicted overnight. Which all made me want a warm, summery painting. It's 80 degrees and sunny in this painting.
