Hidden Pool - SOLD

Hidden Pool
Oil on Canvas Panel, 9" x 12"
SOLD at $27, with shipping included.

My little granddaughter, Kayla, wanted to paint on my lap on Saturday, while she was here for the weekend, so I let her play with my oils and a canvas panel. When she was done, and frustrated (she's six, and was trying to paint "Elsa's Castle" from Frozen) I just took the canvas, and spread the paint already there, as an undercoat. (Yes, she had on old clothes, and yes, those clothes became paint rags.) So this is a palette knife painting on that canvas. I've used the palette knife in two ways, as a frosting spreader tool, and as a pencil tool. If you click to see this one larger, you'll be able to tell.

Here's a detail (close up) of  the palette knife work.

This one was done with a red undercoat, then painted in acrylics, loosely, and then palette knife in oil over the entire painting. Time consuming, but effective. The tip of the palette knife gives me an almost pencil-like control, over stroking and blending and placement of colors.

Hibiscus Watercolor - SOLD

Hibiscus Watercolor
Watercolor on Arches Paper, 14" x 14"
SOLD at $12 plus $8 shipping.

This one is way different from my usual "look" in watercolors. The background, for one thing. (Normally I leave the paper.) And I learned a new technique, which I practiced on this one. It's a way to make veins, not by drawing lines, but by making paint move away from water, creating "lines" or edges. This one has a lot of presence, since 14" x 14" is fairly large, and there's a lot of color.

Okay, so today I decided to go ahead and do a fussy, complex piece in watercolor.
You've probably seen earlier versions of this one, if you've been with me for awhile, but it's always fresh for someone. Signed in the lower right hand corner.

Watercolor Landscape - SOLD

Watercolor Landscape
Watercolor on Arches Paper, 14" x 18"
SOLD at $20 plus $8 shipping.

Below are a couple of possible crops for this painting.
It needn't stay as large as it is.

It's been a long time since I've done anything with watercolor besides flowers, mostly pansies, irises, and sunflowers. I didn't feel like a big complicated floral today (tired after church) but did want to use this new block of Arches watercolor paper, a gift from a collector (thanks, KM!) So here's a landscape instead.
It's pretty simple, so I've given you a couple of cropping options, which you can figure out yourself.

Here's another one on reclaimed canvas, this time a panel, which KM found for me at Goodwill. Yay!
It's a perfectly good canvas, still had it's plastic wrap on it, and it was wonderful to paint on today. The landscapes come so much more easily to me than say, grapes. Thanks for looking.

Grapes in Green Bowl

I revised this one today. I have no problem whatever attacking a painting that needs revision. Don't you think it's much better? I changed the shape of the bowl (it was wonky on the left side,) made the background dark, changed the color and shading on the bowl, and went over the grapes more carefully. NOW it's nice.
It has a bit of a formal look to it, but that's okay.

Here's how it looked before.

A simple bowl of grapes, but this one took me a long time today.
I'm not sure if I like it or not, I've been looking at it for awhile.

Here is a close up detail of the palette knife stroke:

This one started out as a lesson in acrylics for my private student, Kelly, yesterday. I wanted to show her how you could use a solid color (red in this case) as an undercoat, and let bits of the color show through.
Today I decided to paint over it with a palette knife, and sometimes that's just right. Using the very tip of a palette knife is almost like drawing with a pencil, there's so much control, and you can get such nice  variations, and color shifts. Isn't this one nice, in site of it being out of season?

One of my earliest collectors was in town visiting her son, so we got together this week and gallivanted. She brought me art goodies, (thanks, KM!) including some older canvases. Estate sale, or maybe a thrift shop, or flea market; wherever they came from, they are a dream to paint on. Even after sitting for who knows how long, this one had perfect tension and a perfect stretch from the get go. The canvas was lovely to paint on, good tooth, nice fabric. It isn't a known brand, just an old no-name stretched canvas, but even then, the quality of  this older canvas makes me wonder where the pride went. It was nicer to paint on than anything branded that I've bought at Michaels in forever. Today you get decent canvas only when you pay crazy top dollar. (Sigh.) Is it like that with most things today?
Tell you what, I'm looking in Goodwill and the Sal for canvas whenever I can. Thrift shops, you bet.
