Mandarin March - SOLD

Mandarin March Oil on Canvas Panel, 9" x 12" Sold at sale price, $25.00 plus shipping. I have been wanting to try some more subtle colors for my backgrounds, and I find some greys just beautiful. Soft, warm, cool, subtle. So here is my first attempt to try something a bit off kilter for my background. I guess you could call it khaki and be on target. Using the mandarins from the trees again. My daughter harvested grapefruit today.

Magnolia One - SOLD

Magnolia One Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 10" SOLD at $40.00 plus shipping. I bought this fake magnolia at Michael's with the intention of matching a painting to some of the white tulips I've done (to make a set.) This was just practice, since the colors are so warm. I will definitely try this flower again in a cooler shadow color. But hey, the silly fake flower cost $10.00, so I'll get my money's worth out of it.

Floral in Red - SOLD

Floral in Red Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 16" SOLD This one is a repeat of a very early painting, requested by a dear Southern lady I've met since being here in Louisiana. Hope you like it, May!

Backyard Harvest - SOLD

Backyard Harvest Oil on Stretched Canvas, 14" x 14" SOLD. The trees in the backyard are ready to be picked, and it's fun to watch Jim (my son-in-law) and the kids go out with bowls to fill from the trees. The mandarins and navels have been just as sweet as can be. I grabbed a few for this bag. Thanks for looking.

Avocado on Black Plate - SOLD

Avocado on Black Plate Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 10" SOLD at $40.00 plus shipping. I bought a bunch of colored plates at Tuesday Morning when I lived in Maryland, so have my choices of plates for still lives. I decided to try this black one under the avocados, and it's very different for me to use black like this. It does make the avocado pop out, doesn't it?

Three Poppies - SOLD

Three Poppies Oil on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14" SOLD at $75.00 plus shipping. I was playing here with the idea of a somewhat abstracted background, and I like how that turned out. It still has the feeling of "leafiness" without actually defining anything specific. I was also using a limited palette for this one, with odd (for me) blues and yellows, not my standard palette of colors. I used Prussian Blue and Indigo with Yellow Ochre.

Sunday Stroll - SOLD

Sunday Stroll
Oil on Canvas Board, 12" x 16"
SOLD at $90.00 plus shipping.
This was an earlier painting, called Last Light, which I painted in the srping from a photo that I had taken. I did some revisions and like it even better. The nice thing about woodsy scenes is that when you add another layer, they just get richer and more interesting. This one has a lot of different little spots of color in it, and turned out very nicely. Click to see details.

Bowl with Avocados on Stripes - SOLD

Bowl with Avocados on Stripes Oil on Canvas Panel, 12" x 12" SOLD at $85.00 plus shipping. I really didn't think I would ever be done with this one, the stripes took forever to paint. Okay, maybe not forever, but the better part of yesterday. I really am happy with the way this one turned out, and I'm glad I chose the avocados for in the bowl, since I really didn't want the focus on the contents of the bowl, but on the bowl itself. I also like the way the light plays on the fabric.

The Light Beyond - SOLD

The Light Beyond Oil on Gesso Board, 9" x 12" SOLD at $45.00 plus shipping. I am working on a larger piece with stripes again, and wanted to take a bit of a break from it. So decided to do a fast landscape, and what was meant to be a "quick and dirty little painting" turned into a fairly detailed piece. Probably because I was working on the Gessoboard, which can take detail easily. I like the feeling in this one.

Onion Perched, Revised

Onion Perched, Revised Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 10" Available at $30.00 plus shipping. With the help of some of my readers, offering suggestions, and after just looking at this painting for awhile, I went rough and loose on it, and revised the whole thing. The colors work much better, the background was yellow before.

Tiny Landscape with Frame - SOLD

Tiny Landscape with Frame
Oil on Canvas Panel, 5" x 7"
Frame measures 7.75" x 9.75"
SOLD at $40.00 plus shipping.
While hunting for an older painting (never did find it) yesterday, I came across this little frame that I'd picked up at a frame shop sale. Thought I'd paint something to go inside it. As you can see from the middle photo, the inside corner edges don't quite match up because of the irregular pattern, but it isn't really noticeable (see bottom photo.) Add a couple of tiny tacks to hold the painting in, a wire for the back, and you've got a nice little completed piece (or maybe a Christmas gift.)

Red Glass with Onions

Red Glass with Onions Oil on Stretched Canvas, 10" x 10" Available at $50.00 plus shipping. This one was a challenge, and I'm not completely happy with it, but at this point it's about the best I can do. The glass turned out glassy, but the red light through the glass, shining on the onion in the back just wouldn't be identified. I kept squinting and guessing, but the color just wasn't clear to me. Overall, though, I'm satisfied with it.

Lemons in Blue Pottery - SOLD

Lemons in Blue Pottery Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8" SOLD at $45.00 plus shipping. This will be the last of the lemon paintings for a bit. I have so much enjoyed doing them. The bowl is by potter Beverly Halpert, and is one of my treasures. Thanks for looking.

Lemons with Leaves - SOLD

Lemons with Leaves Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8" SOLD at $25.00 plus $5.00 shipping. I think in the small sizes, the 8" x 8" size might be my favorite. There is just enough room to move, but not so much room that you have to flounder to fill it. I like this one, also of the lemons, leaves now drying up, from the backyard.

Backyard Lemons - SOLD

Backyard Lemons Oil on Stretched Canvas, 10" x 10" SOLD at $75.00 plus shipping. This one turned out really nicely, I think. My daughter has five different citrus trees in her backyard now, among them a lovely lemon tree. The lemons are so pretty, they have a smoother skin than most lemons I've seen, very soft lemon scent. One thing I did not realize about citrus trees is the length of ripening time needed. All these trees: grapefruit, mandarins, lemon, orange and key lime have been growing and ripening since we arrived here in July, all summer long. I just had to do the lemons, you know?

Little Shore Scene - NA

Little Shore Scene Oil on Stretched Canvas, 10" x 10" Not Available, see November 29 post. This is an imaginary scene, made up from several different photo references. What I was most interested in was the colors in the sand, that wet sand color of lavender, gray, blue, pink orange. You know the color? It started out as a palette knife painting, but when that got scraped away, it left a nice base for the rocks. Thanks for viewing.

Yellow Pepper Monochromatic - NA

Yellow Pepper Monochromatic Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8" Not available, reclaimed canvas. This little guy was actually hard to paint. The colors kept "blinding" me in the spotlight, all that orangey yellow. I had to get up and walk away from it often to let my eyes refresh. The little ones are fun to do, you can spend some time on the details.

Yellow peppers, Polka Dots - SOLD

Yellow Peppers, Polka Dots
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14"
SOLD.

The peppers on the lighter fabric show up better, I think.
I love going for the translucent quality of the skins where the light shines through. Thanks for looking.

Peppers on Peppers - SOLD

Peppers on Peppers
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14"
Sold.

Someone, I'm not sure who, suggested more peppers. And since I like doing them anyway, here are more peppers. I found this fabric when I went to buy them, and thought it was cool for a background. It was tricky to get the color of the fabric right, black fabric with light on it changes dramatically. I'm not sure that it was a complete success, but that's why we keep trying.

Avocado Half - SOLD

Avocado Half, Oil on Centurion Linen Stretched Canvas, 5" x 7" Gallery Wrapped, no framing needed SOLD at $25.00 plus shipping. One of my new favorite painters, Michael Naples, does the most amazing paintings, and several of them were in a series of these incredible avocado halves. Some of the paintings are of each of the halves and then a couple had both halves side by side, just beautiful. Worth checking out. So, of course, I wanted to try an avocado. Mine didn't turn out even close to his, but it was fun to try anyway. This little freebie canvas was a sample from Centurion, and quite nice. I was able to sit the avocado right on my easel next to the painting. The painting is gallery wrapped and painted around the edges, needing no frame, if that's your choice.
