Since I'm working on a large canvas, and it's going slowly, I pulled this watercolor to post as a daily painting for today. (The progress of the large canvas is posted below. ) I had done this one as a lesson for an online friend for mentoring purposes, and didn't think it was quite worthy for selling. But when I looked at it again this morning, I thought "Hmm, it's not bad at all." So here you have the same scene that I did previously in oils, done in watercolor. Thanks for looking.

This is the progress on the large painting so far. Working on the people first, and a general block in. I thought it might be interesting to show the unfinished piece, and along the way. My granddaughter wanted to be in it, so she's there under the round green umbrella. It's good for me to see it like this too, since now I see where the lady in blue needs to have a longer skirt to make sense. (Where'd her legs go?) Thanks for looking.

As an experiment of sorts, I wanted to see what would happen doing two paintings at one time. I used the same size canvas, and exactly the same resource photo as yesterday's painting (there was interest in the image), and the same palette. I kept them at the same pace, sky here, sky there, alternating them on my easel every 15 or 20 minutes. It was fun to see how each emerged a bit differently, depending on brushwork and colors chosen, and the difference in the drawing. I did feel a little distracted though, as I was also taking photos to do a process entry on the other blog. The mini tutorial is on my sketchblog, Nel's Art Marks (link on the sidebar). At the Farmer's Market yesterday on the town green, our booth-neighbors (organic farmers) had these gorgeous bouquets of August flowers. We bartered: they got a painting and I got flowers and bunches of veggies and fruit. I think this one has a flavor of all that color and shape, some of the individual flowers are better painted than others, but by and large, I'm happy with it. Thanks for looking.

Of the two paintings I did last night and this morning, I like this one better. However, I still am struggling mightily with how to paint flowers with petals. I want to paint like Carol Marine, who does exquisite work (http://carolmarine.blogspot.com/) with all her flowers and still lives, but I'm simply not there yet. I'll just keep working at it. First one painted, because I have some new linen canvas boards and wanted to paint on them. It's a wonderful surface to paint on, really, even though I'm still struggling with how to paint petals on flowers. I want to do them in a decisive manner with thick paint, but when I do that, it only looks blobby. Oh, well, on to the next effort. Thanks for looking.
Brownie Lake

This lovely lake is part of Rutland State Park, just outside Barre. A nice lady enjoying the lake with her dog told me that its name is Brownie Lake, and I hope I've spelled it right. A wonderful day for painting outside, just hot enough, nice breeze. I really liked the color of all the "stuff" floating on the water, and the bright greens of the water plants growing near shore. I decided to work with a limited palette today, no yellows, no blues. It's a palette from a book on oils, which gives three limited palettes: blue-yellow, purple-orange, and this one in red-greens. You get a turquoise and a citron, and then several reds and greens, black and white. So I spent a lot of time mixing colors today, to get the brighter ones I wanted. (Citron and Scarlet make a nice orange.) I like this one a lot, it has harmony to it. The book: The Yin/Yang of Painting by Hongnian Zhang, a lovely book. Thanks for looking.

It was so beautiful outside today, that I went and sat in the backyard, and painted what my grandson Jimmy calls the "Dragonfly Park" where he was busy catching them, large and small. It's a small plein air piece after all the detail of the sunflowers, painted loose and sketchy. I was tring to capture the sparkle of the morning, with the bright light popping thru the woods in the back, and the light on the wildflowers. Thanks for looking.

I decided after looking at this one a few more times, that the wine color in the background was too dark (though I love the deep burgundy.) Yesterday we went blueberry picking, and this was the scene as we were leaving. The farm is tucked away at the end of a dirt road, and this is so typical of the landscapes here in this part of New England. Lots of dappled woodland. I did take some shots of the kids picking, but I haven't decided yet what to do with them. This one is a little different for me, since I used some new greens, rather than my usual warm yellow-greens. There are more of the grey-greens here, and cool blue greens. Thanks for looking.
