There seems to be a lot of interest in the West Virginia pieces, so here's yet another version of the abandoned barn on the Clutter Farm. The "girls" I know who grew up there mentioned that they thought the barn should look bigger, since it is a two story affair, so in this one, I tried for a bigger look.

When we were here, I was timid to go through the grass to the barn, thinking about snakes. But my friend T, who grew up here, and used to play in this barn (it seemed so much bigger then, she reports), had no hesitation at all, and tromped all over the property, looking at the foundations of the old house, picking pears from the old pear tree, and generally enjoying her childhood memories. It is a beautiful spot.

I was blessed to go along for the weekend with a friend headed to West Virginia. Soooooo beautiful in the Allegheny Mountains, rolling farmland, roads winding up one side of a mountain and down the other. I enjoyed a feast for the eyes. We stopped to see the farm where she grew up, climbed a fence to walk up the hill to see the foundations and barn, still there, with the mountains all around. Lovely!

This one is revised from a September 5th piece called Evening Melody.
I have softened the colors in the foreground, lightened the blues in the clouds, and softened the oranges overall. I think this is much more cohesive.

Have you noticed the trees just beginning to turn? Are there leaves on the ground already?
Here in Maryland, we've got signs of fall everywhere, some cool mornings, leaves on the ground, school buses.... Anyway, this is the first of the fall paintings, and there will be more. I love this time of year, in a melancholy way, sad to see it getting dark earlier, sad to know that summer is as good as over.
