Just an imaginary, made up scene, somewhere I'd like to be, without the buggies of course.
Let's just imagine there is a nice breeze, so we can have a lovely mid-day picnic. What shall we eat?

Here's another one on reclaimed canvas, this time a panel, which KM found for me at Goodwill. Yay!
It's a perfectly good canvas, still had it's plastic wrap on it, and it was wonderful to paint on today. The landscapes come so much more easily to me than say, grapes. Thanks for looking.

You've seen this similar pieces, before. I've used the reference photo a few times. But I had this lovely canvas, and wanted something easy to paint, just for the pleasure of using such nice canvas.

Here is a close up detail of the palette knife stroke:
This one started out as a lesson in acrylics for my private student, Kelly, yesterday. I wanted to show her how you could use a solid color (red in this case) as an undercoat, and let bits of the color show through.
Today I decided to paint over it with a palette knife, and sometimes that's just right. Using the very tip of a palette knife is almost like drawing with a pencil, there's so much control, and you can get such nice variations, and color shifts. Isn't this one nice, in site of it being out of season?

One of my earliest collectors was in town visiting her son, so we got together this week and gallivanted. She brought me art goodies, (thanks, KM!) including some older canvases. Estate sale, or maybe a thrift shop, or flea market; wherever they came from, they are a dream to paint on. Even after sitting for who knows how long, this one had perfect tension and a perfect stretch from the get go. The canvas was lovely to paint on, good tooth, nice fabric. It isn't a known brand, just an old no-name stretched canvas, but even then, the quality of this older canvas makes me wonder where the pride went. It was nicer to paint on than anything branded that I've bought at Michaels in forever. Today you get decent canvas only when you pay crazy top dollar. (Sigh.) Is it like that with most things today?
Tell you what, I'm looking in Goodwill and the Sal for canvas whenever I can. Thrift shops, you bet.

It actually feels like today's weather here in the DC area. Gorgeous sunshine, not too hot, nice breeze.

Daisy Sketch - SOLD
Daisy Sketch
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"
SOLD at $20 plus $8 shipping.
This one is very loose and sketchy. I did the daisies a little differently, laying down all the shadow color first, then going over it with white. The white picked up the color underneath. I kind of like it this way, though next time I'll go darker with the flowers in shadow.

Muguet des Bois
Watercolor and Colored Pencil on Watercolor Paper, 6" x 8"
SOLD at $12 plus $5 shipping.
There will be two posts (hopefully) today. This is just my little tribute to the precious Lily of the Valley growing in my yard. The poor plants are so crowded that there aren't many blooms. But what does bloom is fragrant and sweet. I had to something with them. This one I drew, then did colored pencil, then watercolor.

Seaside Cottages - (Two Versions) SOLD
Seaside Cottages
Oil on Canvas Panel, 9" x 12"
SOLD at $18 plus $8 shipping.
Yesterday I watched a demo by Johannes Vloothuis, you've heard me talk about him before. It was a subject that I need work on anyway, buildings. So after church today, I ran the video again with pauses so I could paint along, after a fashion. I've got some wonky lines here, but it does have a bit of charm, regardless.
Monday: Another version for a collector who really wanted yesterday's. Also SOLD.
This one is more deliberate, I think. Which appeals more?
The more sketchy first one, or the more exacting, careful second one?
