Little Pansy Face
Oil on Board, 6" x 6"
SOLD at $20.00 plus $5.00 shipping.
Browsing at the DC Utrecht store yesterday, I thought I was being so clever when I saw and snagged a package of 4 aquaboards for around $4.00. Wow, what a deal, and no bad corners in the bunch. However, I will Gesso the other three, since this one absorbed all the oil out of my oils as soon as I painted. Odd way to paint, so the pansy is not as nice as I hoped.

The Duck Pond - SOLD
The Duck Pond Oil on Stretched Canvas, 18" x 18"
SOLD at $150.00, includes shipping. Detail below
This is the largest piece I've tried yet with the palette knives, and I thought I'd never be done with it today. One of the challenges with this one was to show some of the shallows, which I probably wasn't bold enough to really go for. But the suggestion is there. I especially like the sky and trees in this one. Nel http://nelseverydaypainting.blogspot.com/

Fall Reflections - SOLD
Fall Reflections
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 8"
SLD at $40.00 plus $5.00 shipping.
Revised from Painting Below.
What do you think? Better? I lowered the horizon line, and made the sky more interesting, changed the colors to be more subtle, and turned the bare trees into leafy trees. I like it better now, wonder if you do.

Give Away Painting
Give Away Painting
Oil on Canvas Panel, 6" x 8"
Appreciation Painting. Won by Dana Pritchard.
My students will recognize this one. It was one of their exercises in value study for the class in oils we just finished. It was done from a photo by Martyn Pattison, called Path Through the Woods at Lambdown Hill. It has a creative commons tag on it, so it was okay for teaching and studying, but I can't sell it. So...it's a give away. If you like it, and are either a former student or have bought one of my pieces within the past year or so (I'm not checking) please leave a comment here on the blog. Thanks for all the encouragement and support!

Addendum: Congratulations to Dana Pritchard, winner of this little piece.

Study in Grey - SOLD
Study in Grey
Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas, 12" x 12" x 1.5"
No Frame Needed.
SOLD at $80.00 plus shipping.
Detail of Knife Work below.
I put down a wash of yellow on the sky and water, and a wash of blue on the land, in anticipation of trying a sublte study in greyswith the palette knives. All my mixes were greyed, either with their complements or with a tube grey. Nice, huh? I like the softness of it. The painting extends around top, sides and bottom, so no framing is necessary.

Textured Fruit on Red - SOLD
Textured Fruit on Red
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 8"
SOLD at $25.00 plus $5.00 shipping.
This started out three times to be a gorgeous rose, leftover from a really unusual bouquest from Mother's Day (rose red on the outside of the petals, yellow on the inside, spectacular) but it just wasn't making sense, roses are hard. So I wiped it off after the third attempt and just did some fruit instead, which turned out a little ho-hum, but might be a bright spot in a corner somewhere.

Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas, 12" x 16" x 1.5"

Detail of Palette Knife work below.
This one isn't quite finished, but my hand got tired, weilding the knife, and it's basically done except for the sides, top and botton, which will also have to be knife work. (no frame needed) The left side is a lot harder for me, since the knife has to cross my body in my right hand, and curve backwards, so the strokes are a bit different there. But it does give it more variation and texture. I've priced this one a little higher since it's taking soooo long, all those little tiny strokes.

Rocky Creek Revised - SOLD
Rocky Creek, Revised
Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas, 12" x 12" x 1.5"
SOLD at $65.00 plus shipping.
Original below.
I'm having fun with the palette knives. This painting never sold, done from April 18th, so I figured I'd play with it a little more, see if I could improve it. Changed the rocks, changed the background a little, changed the values some, and made it generally richer. And of course, a lot more texture. I'm starting to like the palette knife work. What do you think?
(Gallery wrapped, no frame needed. Tha painting extends all around, and yes, that got changed too.)

Corridor of Light
Corridor of Light
Palette Knife in Oils on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 12"
Available at $60.00 plus shipping.
Detail of Knife Work Below:
I wanted to try a landscape with the Palette Knife, so this is an imaginary scene, very simple. Done entirely with palette knife. It's really fun, and the possibilites for subtle work are so there. Most of the strokes on this one are done with just the tip of the knife, so there's a lot of texture involved. I think it still needs a ripple or two, but as wet as it is, I didn't want to mess it up, I may put them in when it's just a bit drier.

Palette Knife Still Life - SOLD
Palette Knife Still Life
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14"
SOLD at $60.00 plus shipping.
A challenge today for me. The palette knife is not comfortable for my hand, and I mean for it to become a useful tool, so today I set out to try my hand at a still life with the knives I have. There are definite advantages; your colors stay clean and you don't contaminate them, they can mix on the painting. Easy wipe, clean tool. Disadvantages too; it's an awkward tool and edges and control are hard. Okay, I cheated a little bit with brushes, but not much.

Polka Dot Bowl with Fruit - SOLD
Polka Dot Bowl with Fruit
Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas, 8" x 8" x 1.25"
SOLD.
This one is done by request, using the techniques from the book, Capturing Radiant Light and Color..., by Susan Sarback. I had to sit down last night and review the book, since it's been awhile since I read it and tried to follow some of her instructions. It didn't come back easily, this one was a struggle. I still have to extend the painting around the edges, but I think I'm pretty happy with the end results. Hope the collector is too!

May Magnolia - SOLD
May Magnolia
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 12"
SOLD at $75.00 plus shipping.
I haven't done a floral in awhile, so pulled out my magnolia stems and came up with this one, for May, a magnolia blossom. Dramatic, all the white against a deep, dark red purple background (which looks black here.) Hope you're all having a gorgeous weekend.

Dappled Creek Redux - SOLD
Dappled Creek Redux Oil on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14"
SOLD at $75.00 plus shipping.
Below is the original version.
Base painting. I thought this one was done, but after spending so long in the field the other day, looking at this one again, it occurred to me that maybe it was under done. Maybe I have to be aware of underworking, not overworking. The bones, as you can see, are the same, but I went over most of it again, and made it more polished. Better, yes?

Papa Berry NA
Papa Berry
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 8"
Revised on June 1, 2010.
I had strawberries from two different containers, and this arrangement tickled me, all the little guys with one big one. It suggested an instructor..."If you want to get as big as me..." or maybe a storyteller, but in the end, I decided on a papa title. Fun, isn't it?

Two Plein Air Paintings - SOLD
The Cut Through to Peppertree Oil on Canvas Panel, 11" x 14" SOLD at $65.00 plus shipping. Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 10"
Revised, SOLD.
The complex has contracted for new windows and screens in all the apartments, and today was our turn, for men who banged with hammers, drilled with drills, and carried things in and out. (The new windows and slider are lovely.) I fled to the field out back, and got 2 plein air paintings done. The first one, same thing as the other day, of the huge old trees up and across the hill, and then I followed the shade and faced the other way. I really took my time (waiting for the guys to be done) with it, and I am really pleased with the way the Cut Through turned out. You can just see our building through the trees.

I had several titles in mind for this one...Honeysuckle Bushes, Barely There Clouds...but in the end, decided to just call it what it is, a roadside in Barre, Massachusetts, from one of my photos. Working to get a feel of distance in more of my work. Thanks for looking!

Plein Air School Yard
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 10"
SOLD at $35.00 plus shipping.
OK, the mosquitoes won this round. I thought at first it was nice enough outside, and got all settled without my bug spray, and before I knew it I was scratching everywhere. Retrieved my spray, but the heebie jeebies got me. So this one is only a half hour study, but I like it anyway. The shadow on the top right is from the clip on my Open M box.
