Sun Glazed Maples, Revised - SOLD
Sun Glazed Maples, revised
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 12"
SOLD at $50.00 plus shipping.
This one was a bit too dark, I thought, so revised it and am offering it again, with a slightly lower price. A good blast of color for this end of the year piece.

Mugs and Pears - NA

Hydrangea Horizontal - SOLD
Hydrangea Horizontal
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 16"
SOLD at $45.00 plus shipping.
I am running low on my favorite sizes of canvas, but did have a couple of these panels in the long size. Thinking about what I could use it for today, I decided to just lay out one of my stems of hydrangea and see what I could do. What do you think?

Funky Stack - SOLD
Funky Stack
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"
SOLD at $30.00 plus shipping.
Today was mostly babysitting and running around, so I only had a couple of short hours to paint tonight. Some of my collectors surprise me when they like the rough and tumble paintings, so even though this one is very sketchy, very rough, I thought I'd put it up anyway.

Dusty Rose Gallery Wrapped - SOLD
Dusty Rose, Gallery Wrapped
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 8" x 7/8"
SOLD at $45.00, includes shipping.
This one will need no frame, unless preferred. I am painting all around the sides, continuing the image. I like this one, not so much for the rose, as for the color. That dusty, almost pink, but with brown, rose color.

Large White Peony - SOLD
Large White Peony
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 16" x 20"
SOLD at $100.00 plus shipping.
I've had this one drawn out for a few days, and spray fixed, but waited until yesterday to begin it. It takes awhile to paint a good sized piece like this, so finished it up today. Don't you love peonies? I've done this one in watercolors before, so this time it's with oils.

Christmas Tree, 2009 - SOLD
Christmas Tree, 2009
Pen and Ink, watercolor, and markers on Cream Paper, 9" x 12"
SOLD at $25.00, includes shipping.
A Blessed Christmas, everyone!
I hope that this day, you have the blessings of our Lord in your life and in your heart. What more could we hope for, a closer walk with Him.
One of my collectors reminded me that a couple of years ago, I did a pen and ink of my daughter's Christmas tree in Massachusetts. So I did one for this year, a little different, and maybe it will become a tradition for this blog. This was so restful to do, all those patient little scritchy lines, which seems to me relaxing, just stroke along until it fills in. I am happy with the results, it seems a bit Victorian looking, don't you think?

View from my Window - SOLD
View from my Window
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 12"
SOLD at $55.00 plus shipping.
I generally have my back to this window, to catch the light, but the snow is still so lovely, that I turned my chair around today to paint this. Of course, with the wild growth, there is a lot more vine and scrap, but I condensed it. For those of you who celebrate Christmas Eve, I hope that yours is meaningful and precious.

Christmas Poinsettia - NA
Christmas Poinsettia
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 12"
NA, Revised Dec 1, 2010.
One of my collectors asked me about holiday images recently...like, hey, when? LOL. So, I figured I'd better do something besides a watercolor with my lovely poinsettia plant. The grey shadow (top, center) was a cast shadow from my easel, and isn't in the painting.

Gallery Wrapped Sienna Iris - SOLD
Gallery Wrapped Sienna Iris
Detail of wrap below
Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas, 8" x 8" x 1.25"
Sold.
Odd today to be painting a sunny iris while the snow just poured down in the DC area, but that's what I had planned, so I put on some Christmas music and laughed at the contradiction. Nice to be in the middle of a snow storm if you don't have to go out, and the report was that there wasn't anyplace to go anyway, since everything was closed.

Poinsettia Watercolor - SOLD
Poinsettia Watercolor
Watercolor on Arches 140 lb paper, 9" x 12"
Image size slightly smaller
SOLD at $35.00 plus $5.00 shipping.
My dear cousins treated me to the most gorgeous, full bloomed pointsettia I've ever had, and so I just had to pick out a couple of the blooms to try with watercolors. I think there must be 30 separate blooms on the plant. Gorgeous! Thanks, H and D.

Summer Rooftops
Summer Rooftops
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14"
Available at $60.00 plus shipping.
This one is a repeat of a plein air piece I did this past summer, looking out our 5th floor window. I changed it up a bit, and made the front roof more red. The collector who requested it opted to pass, and it happens from time to time. Sometimes a painting will just "sing" to you, and the repeat doesn't.

Sun Glazed Maples
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 12"
Not available, See revised on 12/31/09.
Thsi one is actually yesterday's painting, and just as I was about to post it, I lost my Internet connection. It never did come back, but this morning I have it again. So here is Thursday's piece, just because I wanted the color.

Landscape Series: Number 2 - SOLD
Landscape Series: Number 2
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 8"
SOLD at $45.00 plus shipping.
I never thought this would be tricky, but it is more than I realized. Without something as reference, except the general shapes of the composition, it's all imagination. Maybe I'll get better at it as I go along, it's a good challenge. I was thinking high summer on this one.
Little Iris Watercolor - SOLD

Winter Magnolia - SOLD

Landscape series: Deep Fall NA
Landscape Series: Deep Fall Afternoon
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 8"
Not available, revised on May 18, 2010.
The idea is not new. I want to try doing a series of small landscapes, I'm thinking 25 or so, all with the same composition. The changes will be in color, value, time of day, and season. This is the first, a late fall day, some trees bare, sun shining, like today!

Winter Creek Sunset 3 - SOLD
Winter Creek Sunset 3
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 12"
SOLD at $50.00 plus shipping.
I actually like doing the same painting over three times in a row. By the third one, you've figured out the "order" of painting. Trunks first, to preserve the darks, then background foliage, then foreground and water, and last, sky and details. So you can then think about what you want to change, or the flavor of the piece. I was going for more "mystery" in this one, although I'm not sure it turned out that way. More calligraphic brushwork too, in the foreground, which I like (yes, my Escoda brush again.) And I let myself have more red and orange this time. We'll see if the collector likes it.
Long Bendy Iris - SOLD

Winter Woods Sunset Large - SOLD
Winter Woods Sunset, Large
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 16" x 20"
SOLD at $85.00 plus shipping.
I wish the photo was better, since this is really a nice painting, and the glare spoils the look a bit. I'm just generally pleased with it, the water, the feeling of the sky, the colors of the background foliage.
Rainbow Tulips, Watercolor - SOLD
Rainbow Tulips
Watercolor on Arches 140 lb paper
Paper size 12" x 16", image size 11" x 13"
SOLD at $25.00, includes shipping.
I wet each separate part and dropped in an assortment of colors, let them run around. One of the funnest things to do with watercolors. Done from a photo of tulips that I had taken at my daughters.
Random Leaves Watercolor - SOLD
Random Leaves, Watercolor
Watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb paper,
paper size 6" x 18"
SOLD at $20.00, includes shipping.
I have a watercolor spiral bound sketchbook that I haven't used much, and thought leaves would be great dancing across the page. Lots of colors in this one, and the leaves are just imaginary.

Winter Woods Sunset -SOLD
Two More at Fifteen - SOLD
Maple Leaves
Watercolor on Arches 140 lb paper,
paper size 12" x 16", image size 8.5" x 9.5"

Backyard 2
Watercolor on 140 lb paper
Paper size: 12" x 16", image size 11" x 14"
SOLD at $12.00 plus $3.00 shipping.
Another couple of quickie watercolors, since it went over well yesterday.
I like the simplicity of the maple leaves, done from a photo I still had of Massachusetts maples.

Folded Pink Rose - SOLD
Two at Fifteen - SOLD
Cropping Possibility above.
SOLD at $12.00 plus $3.00 shipping.
Colored Pencil on Bristol Paper
Image size: 7" x 8" , Paper size: 9" x 12"
SOLD at $12.00 plus $3.00 shipping.
An experiment to see whether my collectors might be interested in inexpensive pieces done in media besides oils. Works on paper are also easy to send, but mean matting, glass and frames for the collector.

Lazy Creek - SOLD
Lazy Creek
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 16"
SOLD at $40.00 plus shipping.
Another painting that I have saved out for a gallery, but simply can't get enough pieces together to make it worthwhile. Maybe this coming year I can focus on making it more a career than simply my hodge podge way of painting.
Blushing Pears - Gifted

Pink Orchid - SOLD
Pink Orchid
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 16"
SOLD at $45.00 plus shipping.
I picked up some canvas panels, in this size that I like (mainly because I hardly ever see them this size) and didn't think to Gesso them before painting. Mistake. This one was a struggle, just because I had to coax the paint to stay on the canvas, it was so slick. I will definitely Gesso the other two panels. Because of all the careful blending then, I think this one has a bit of an Oriental flavor, don't you?
Thanksgiving Magnolia Revised - SOLD
Friday, November 27, 2009
Sandy Creek - SOLD
Sandy Creek
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 16" x 20"
SOLD at $85.00 plus shipping.
This one is bigger than what I've been doing lately, but I really felt like a creek scene today, and didn't have a medium size canvas. I love the two major colors here, Caput Mortem Violet (dried blood color) and Turquoise plus turquoisey greens. A couple of my two current favorites.

Orchid with Pastel Colors - SOLD
Orchid with Pastel Colors
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14"
SOLD at $30.00 plus shipping.
So, is there football on the TV at your house? Are there good Thanksgiving smells wafting from the kitchen? All kinds of goodness of the day. I hope you are enjoying your day, wherever you may be today, and are blessed.
This one has nothing at all to do with Thanksgiving. I wanted to try a very loose floral, since mine are always so tight and careful. Used my magic Escoda brush for the whole painting. The background is also loose, all the leftover cloud colors from the Chase paintings. It's kind of cool, isn't it?

Thanksgiving Magnolia Revised on 11.29
Thanksgiving Magnolia
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 12"
Not Available at $65.00 plus shipping (see 11.29 post for revised version)
Now I don't know if there is any such flower as this, probably not. But I picked up this rich, velvety stem at Michaels and wanted to try painting it. The color of it is actually more "winey" than red, but it isn't going anywhere and I can try it again anytime. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I am truly thankful for all of you.

Chase Copy 2 - SOLD
Chase Copy - SOLD
Chase Copy
Shinnecock Hills, William Merritt Chase, c. 1895
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14"
SOLD at $50.00 plus shipping.
Do you know the American Impressionist painter, William Merritt Chase? I didn't at all (which is no indication of his fame, really) but he was a teacher of Georgia O'Keefe, and his Long Island landscapes are just gorgeous. You can see some of his work here. The one I copied ( a portion of it) is called Shinnecock Hills and it's at the Smithsonian. It's just beautiful, full of ochres, sienna, beautiful greens, lovely. I will be studying his work more, I really didn't get it quite right.

November Magnolia - SOLD

Poppy Copy - SOLD
Poppy Copy, after Georgia O'Keefe, Oriental Poppies, 1927
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 14" x 18"
SOLD at $55.00, includes shipping.
I love Georgia O'Keefe's work, and such an interesting woman.
I do think that there's no better way to study a painter's work than taking the time to study it closely and copying. This one is among my favorites. Just studying closely how she blended her colors, all those sensual lines...yum.
