I watched my Webinar through Wet Canvas again yesterday, and Johannes was doing watercolor sky demos. The colors he used were pretty amazing, so I thought after the Webinar was done, I'd give it a try. Raw Sienna, Indian Red and Cobalt Blue are all the colors in this sky. Neat, isn't it? I enhanced the water with some pastels, and I'm happy with it, though it's very simple.

Interesting new idea from the "Essentials of Painting Skies" Webinar yesterday: paint a sky in the negative. I first painted the entire sky in pink, white, orange acrylic and let that dry, then painted in the blue overtop in oils with negative painting. Very cool.

I liked both of these well enough to revise them and re-post. On the Maples, I added more color, and fixed the "river" that was running through the middle. Also I changed the shapes are directions of the trunks. On the Sunday Drive piece, I added the ending of the fence, and put leaves in the road. There was too much road before. They both look better to me.

Hot Red Irises, yeehaw. And yes, they are almost the same. I decided to try out painting them in tandem, one petal on one and the same petal on the second and so on. It worked out nicely, as they each needed drying time, and I could switch back and forth.

I'm not thrilled with this one. I wanted to see if I could do a loose peony, instead of drawing it out carefully, each little petal and crimp, but as it turns out, a sketch doesn't exactly do it, and I like the careful ones better. But I think it turned out well enough to save, anyway.

One of my students gave me a lovely flower arrangement today in class, left over from her son's recent wedding. I tried to paint one of the roses, a lovely palest pink color. Baby blush or some similar description. I painted, wiped, scraped, and repeated five times to get something even close. Finally I took my palette knife and turned the mess into a landscape.

I spent time today (ahh, that extra hour) while the football games ran in the background, and the leaves made swishsing sounds falling outdoors, revising some older paintings, improving them, I think, and am reducing the prices.

On this one, I made the road less prominent, added more brightness in the sun spots, and added some depth to the undergrowth. Much better, I think.

I am constantly impressed with how some of the daily painters can put so much information onto a 6" x 6" or some other equally small sized canvas. Entire scenes on such a small surface. So I wanted to see what I could do with a landscape. NOT easy. You have to use teensie brushes or the squared edges of larger ones. Your aim with the brush as to be accurate. Hats off to these people, who manage to put people and buildings, entire little worlds into such a tiny format.

I love how the splotches of sunshine work in this one.
The sense of dappled sun came out well, I think. I'm still happily using my reference photos from Massachusetts' falls.

I've included the detail, so that the range of colors will show.

This one is pretty big, and it's satisfying my reaction to the colors right now. Have you noticed how very blue the sky looks with all the yellows and golds against it? Sitting on my deck, looking at "my" woods, I keep being amazed at how deep a cobalt blue the sky is on sunny fall days.

This is the same landscape as the demo I did in class on Thursday last. One of my collectors asked for it, but since it was already sold, I enjoyed doing another one, more carefully. When you demo, you are also trying to be quick so your students have time to paint, and then talking at the same time. It's a skill I'm trying to practice.
