Ice Reflections - SOLD

Ice Reflections
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 16" x 20"
SOLD

I wanted to try a winter landscape, found a somewhat complex photo that I liked because of the backlit sunshine, and this is what came out. I'll let you be the judges.

Late November - SOLD

Late November
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 16" x 20"
SOLD

A hazy November day, overcast afternoon.
A darker fall piece than my usual, but I think that the color harmony works well here.
Love those mauve grays.

Thanksgiving Walk - NA

Thanksgiving Walk
Oil on Linen Panel, 8" x 10"
NA Gifted

Got your pies baked, and all your groceries in the house? Got all your plans sorted out?
Hope you will all have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
I am blessed, I will get to go and celebrate the day with my brother and his family tomorrow, always nice. And after dinner, we should all go for a walk here. Wouldn't that be sweet?

November Afternoon - SOLD

November Afternoon
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8"
SOLD at $20 plus $10 shipping.

I've been working on a couple of commissions, which have been keeping me busy. But today: clear, cold, brisk sunshine, made me want a landscape again. Outside is winterish but sparkly. Inside is nice and warm to paint and look out the window.

Sunshine Ramble - SOLD

Sunshine Ramble
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8"
SOLD

A little one this time, with lots of yellow and off yellow.

Autumn Stream - SOLD

Autumn Stream
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 20" x 20"
SOLD

This is a larger piece, with a concentration of oranges and greens.
I did the water in a slightly different way this time, with ripples instead of reflections.
I like the color harmony here.

Woodland Stream, Fall - SOLD

Woodland Stream, Fall
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 16" x 20"
SOLD

I wanted to try something darker yesterday, but only got about half way done, finished this up after church this afternoon. I used the same reference as in Fall Colors, Quietly from November 2nd, but while this one may be darker than the usual fall piece, it's not exactly "quiet", is it?

Little Fall Scene - NA

Little Fall Scene, Revised from October 23, 2016
Oil on Stretched Canvas
Not available, Gifted

I had a small one drying on the wall that I thought had potential, so revised it today, and it feels much better now.You can click on the image to see it larger.

Fall Colors Quietly - SOLD

Fall Colors Quietly
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"
SOLD at $20 plus $10 shipping.

I wanted Fall, but I wanted something a little less colorful, so I found a good reference photo, and here's what came out. More of the red browns, darker water and more purples give this one a more calm look and feel (as compared to the color blasts that I've been loving and painting.)

Village Lane Watercolor - SOLD

Village Lane Watercolor
Watercolor on Arches Paper, 13" x 16"
SOLD at $15 plus $10 shipping.

I got in my email, a  post from Bob Davies at Art Tutor, and liked the step-by-step so much, I decided to give it a whirl. I think it must be an English village scene; the reference photo was most appealing. Of course I played, so this one is a bit overworked, with gouache and pastel over the watercolor, but hey, I was playing. And yes, I want to try it again.

Here's the link if you'd like to see how different my results are from Bob's.

Autumn Reds - SOLD

Autumn Reds
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 16" x 20"
SOLD at $125.00, includes shipping (Continental US only)

I found a good fall photo reference, which was all reds and greens. Lovely.
This landscape painting isn't quite as subtle as my beautiful reference, but I'm very happy with it.
More often I go for the bright yellows, but this is nice, yes?

Sweet Fall - NA

Sweet Fall
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"

A little path up a hill in autumn.
A quick afternoon painting for a Sunday, with sounds of football drifting in from the living room.
It's fall!

Four Painting Commission

Here's what I've been doing lately.
(Published with permission from the buyer.)

These have been done as a wedding gift for a bride of Japanese descent marrying a groom from Georgia, hence the Cherry Blossoms, the Cherokee Roses (state flower of Georgia), the Red-Crowned Cranes and the Georgia Peaches. Each is 10" x 10" x 1.5", on gallery wrapped canvas.

All are painted top, sides and bottom, but I'll just show the one side, here.

Misty Morning - SOLD

Misty Morning
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 12" x 12"
SOLD at $40 plus $10 shipping.

We had some great fog the other morning, so I found a photo to go along with the feeling. Nice, hanging mistiness over the water, and in the low lying areas.

The Last Peaches - SOLD

The Last Peaches
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 10" x 10"
SOLD
I have a commission for a painting of peaches, so scouted around...aha, Walmart still has peaches, so bought some. Very pretty. Knowing in advance that they would be inedible, since they were hard as hockey pucks. Isn't it sad when you buy fruit already knowing you won't be able to eat it? But at least I have some models for my commission piece.

Cherry Blossom Oil Sketch - SOLD

Cherry Blossom Sketch
Oil on Linen Panel, 8" x 8"
SOLD

My large easel is out for repair right now. Over the years, my oils and solvents had corroded the little shelves where the paintings were propped, so a handyman at church is building me some new canvas perches. All that by way of telling yu that the little blue shadow on the left is from my plein air easel, which has little metal prongs to hold canvas.

I have a commission for cherry blossoms, and did something I'm not sure about, so I thought I'd play on a used canvas, nonthreatening. The demise of the little watermelon piece. Sweet, isn't it?

Summer Sketch - SOLD

Summer Sketch
Oil on Linen Panel, 9" x 12"
SOLD

A quick oil sketch, paying very little attention to exactness.
Just a sketch in oils.

Touch of Red - SOLD

Touch of Red
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14"
SOLD

Here and there are small touches of color; the sycamores on the way to the library are already ochre.
So, here's a little fall preview.

September Air - SOLD

September Air
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14"
SOLD

I used the same reference as yesterday, but I had a lot more room to play.
Or at least if felt like a lot more room. Didn't it turn out nicely?

The Leading Edge of Fall - SOLD

The Leading Edge of Fall
Oil on Linen Panel, 9" x 12"
SOLD.

Yesterday I struggled with another beach person, but I hated the result, it just didn't have any oomph to it. I think the colors were too pale, I was too shy about it all.  I think you'll see what I mean, below. I am waiting for her to dry, and then I'll go at it with some vigor, and some richer color (at least that's the plan.) Maybe put some water behind her as well. Too much sand.

Dude, I Got This! - SOLD

Dude, I Got This!
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 10"
Sold to his Opa (Dutch for Grandpa)

Detail (Close-Up) Below:

This is Logan, with the supreme confidence of  a spectacular 2-yesr old! He was "leading" a big, lovable dog around the house during a gathering of beach house friends. The hound was, of course, twice as big as he was, but "Dude! I Got This", with that sweet casual lean, little foot tweaked and resting. He's extremely verbal, so no trouble relating to anyone.

Boats Waiting - SOLD

Boats Waiting
Oil on Linen Panel, 8" x 8"
SOLD

I actually paddled in the red kayak, Yay, me!
I thought it would be harder than it was. Fun memories.

It's a Summer Thing - NA

It's a Summer Thing
Oil on Linen Panel, 8" x 8"
Not Available.

Watermelon! Such a summer food. I tried to cut a slice, but it wouldn't stand up for me, tipped right over into my paints, so I contented myself with a wedge instead. On my sandstone base.

Westminster Peaches - SOLD

Westminster Peaches
Oil on Stretched Canvas, 8" x 16"
SOLD at $40 plus $10 shipping.

My search for good peaches continues. Out of the five that I bought at the grocery store last week, only one was edible, and that just barely. (Even though they were nice to paint.) So I asked at church, where a farm stand might be, and went yesterday to get tomatoes and peaches. The guy said that these had been picked in Westminster, MD Saturday morning. So we'll see. Meanwhile, certainly "paint worthy."

Two Peaches - SOLD

Two Peaches
Oil on Linen Panel, 5" x 7"
SOLD at $8 plus $7 shipping.

This probably doesn't look like much of an achievement, but I finally found (again) the combination of colors for that subtle mauve purple magenta that you see on peach skins. Yay!

Eastern Shore Peaches - SOLD

Eastern Shore Peaches
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8"
SOLD at $10 plus $10 shipping.

Honestly, one of the best parts of going to the beach is the wonderful food. There are "traditional" stops at great farm stands along the way, between the DC area and the Delaware shore. The tomatoes, the peaches and the corn...oh, my...heavenly. We had peaches! Oh, my, did we have peaches!
So juicy, so perfectly peachy! I've bought some since at the local grocery stores, and you can't even eat them, they are so bad...mushy and mealy and dry. (All they are good for is painting!)

Purple Pouches and Silly Hats

Purple Pouches and Silly Hats
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8"
Available at $20 plus $10 shipping.

Two guys with big bellies were sitting next to us at the ocean, and with a zoom lens I was able to be a beach voyeur. I was glad that I snapped a few shots, since they left soon after. I wondered if they were a father and son.

Spectator Spot - SOLD

Spectator Spot
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8"
SOLD at $15 plus $10 shipping.

A tradition at the "beach house" is to gather on the dock at sunset, and over wine and munchies, watch the sun go down. I loved how the kayaks and canoes were catching just the smallest bits of light, little sparkles.

Dawn at the Ocean - SOLD

The second image is the revised version.
I lengthened the shadow of the umbrella, and revised her face a little.
You can click on the image to see it larger.

Dawn at the Ocean
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8"
SOLD.

This one has been two days in the making, people are so tricky.

I did take some process photos, so thought I'd include a few here:

Drawn in with pastel pencil, and starting with the face and limbs.
Oops, I notice that the legs should be longer.

Lengthen the legs and start dding the details.

The face took forever, and difficult, being so tiny.
Ok. I'm happy with the face, and adding the sky and greenery.

Thanks for looking!

A second version of my great niece with her fishing net.

Kate with Fishing Net - SOLD

Kate with Fishing Net
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8"
SOLD at $25 plus $10 shipping.

The kids found tiny little fish in the bay, and hunted the schools with a fishing net.
This is Kate, next to the dock, scooping up those tiny fishies.

Clam Shells - SOLD

Clam Shells
Pencil on Bristol, 8" x 10"
SOLD at $10 plus $10 shipping.

My cousin taught the kids how to hunt for clams in the bay, and they loved it. They steamed the clams they caught and put them on homemade pizza. Me, I just shuffled around and dug up shells.

Clouds Over the Bay - SOLD

Clouds Over the Bay
Oil on Canvas Panel, 8" x 8"
SOLD

My "beach house" series continues. View from the dock. You can just see a small beach across the bay, which is where, one lovely afternoon, my great niece Kate and I kayaked, and watched some schools of little fish, and some dogs playing in the water. Fun times!
